Art Therapy
I work with people (of all ages, genders, identities) who want to pause, explore and reconnect. Societal expectations of how we should act and navigate the world can be exhausting. It can be hard to feel safe enough to reconnect with our inner selves, fearlessly play with art materials, explore difficult topics, and live authentically.
As an art therapist, my role is to guide clients through the art making process, the thoughts that may come up, and suggest coping strategies. My job is not to interpret your art, but rather listen and support you as you gain your own insight. I hope to collaboratively build the safety needed to be with my clients as they reconnect with their authentic selves.
Art Therapy is a mental health service that utilizes art making with models of counselling and psychotherapy that takes into account the many ways individuals learn, remember, process, and express themselves. Solely using words cannot always fully encapsulate one’s experiences and feelings. In art therapy clients are encouraged to make art and use metaphors to externalize issues. Through this process, clients may foster self-esteem, improve self-awareness, and gain insight into the nature of their difficulties, and possible solutions. Sometimes art making can be enough to gain relief from issues. Other times it is the starting point for future artwork and healing. Unlike traditional art classes, art therapy focuses on the process of making art in a non-judgmental environment.
NO ART MAKING EXPERIENCE NEEDED.
Everyone can make art.
“Art making is my way of bringing soul back into my life. Soul is the place where the messiness of life is tolerated, where feelings animate the narration of life, where story exists. Soul is the place where I am replenished and can experience both gardens and graveyards. Art is my way of knowing who I am.”
-Pat Allen, Art is a Way of Knowing
