About Me
Meet Shannon | BA, DVATI
Shannon (they/them) is a Certified Art Therapist working with a wide range of children to adults. Their educational journey started at Simon Fraser University, where they received a Bachelor’s of Arts majoring in Criminology, minoring in Political Science and receiving a certificate in Forensic Studies. They graduated from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute and are a professional member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA). They utilize their years of experience working with neurodivergent children and youth in the education system to inform their practice. Shannon firmly believes that everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging as their authentic selves, but that societal pressures often make us feel trapped to act a certain way. Shannon strives to co-create a space, where their clients feel safe, respected and encouraged to act authentically and explore their feelings/challenges. Attending art therapy sessions and working on one’s mental health is a big deal. Shannon is honoured to work alongside their clients and support their individual needs. In their free time, they enjoy crocheting, reading graphic novels, listening to podcasts and drawing digital illustrations.
Artist Statement
I am a self taught artist and often describe myself as a jack of all arts and a master of a few. I always enjoyed drawing and making art as a child; however, as an adolescent, I solely focused on the product and made art for others’ approval and praise. Shortly before applying to the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute, I began making spontaneous art and relished the flow of art making. Throughout the art therapy diploma program, I started seeing the healing potential of art making and how often my own images would surprise me. I am passionate about art therapy and am committed to making my practice more accessible.
