About Art Therapy
Art Therapy is a mental health service that utilizes art making with models of counselling and psychotherapy that takes into account the many ways individuals learn, remember, process, and express themselves. In art therapy clients are encouraged to make art, use metaphors to externalize issues, foster self-esteem, improve self-awareness, and gain insight into the nature of their difficulties and possible solutions. Sometimes art making can be enough to gain relief from issues. Other times it is the starting point for future artwork and healing. Unlike traditional art classes, art therapy focuses on the process of making art in a non-judgemental environment.
Why Art?
● We all have an innate drive to create and be creative regardless of skills
● Art can help us reconnect with loss parts of ourselves and our inner child
● Art creates a container to hold difficult topics and feelings
● Some things are not solely processed verbally
● Art techniques can become self-soothing and coping strategies
